WHAT'S BLOOMING IN THE GARDEN - JULY

I'm not even going to pretend to be surprised by the fact that it's already July and the year is halfway over.  The swift passing of time just seems to be ever more evident as we age.  Don't you agree? Spending time in the garden, even in our mild Southern California climate, only seems to accentuate the passing of seasons for me.

I wish that I had been a more faithful blogger through May and June as that is when my garden is at
its most beautiful but as we all know, there is no going back, only living for today and doing better in the future.  With that being said, I'd love to share with you what's blooming in the garden in July.

Actually everything still looks pretty good (with the exception of the roses) considering we just came out of a heatwave that saw many days in a row of triple digit weather.  I tucked in a couple of purple fountain grass to the rear of the bed and love the bit of drama it's feathers add to the garden.

We are enjoying a quick reprieve from the excessive heat before the onset of summer temps, so I knew it was now or never if I was going to share some of my more delicate blooms with you like this pink alstroemeria (peruvian lily).

Because we had such a wonderfully wet winter and spring everything has been gorgeous and lush for the last couple of months.  Even my foxglove which by rights should have melted under our high temps is hanging in there.  I did cut back a few of the first blooms but these late comers are still looking beautiful.

I've added a few more heat tolerant perennials like cone flower, pensteman, salvia and shasta daisies and of course plenty of annual zinnias and cosmos to the bed and am hoping for the blooms to hold me until fall when the roses will put on a second show.

I'm planning to have a full tour of the backyard, including my perennial beds and veggie garden, up on YouTube in the next few days.  I'll pop back on here and instagram when it's ready.

What's blooming your garden this first of July?

  1. Patty, Once again I will try to send a comment. They have been returning to me. I loved so many of your beautiful flowers. You have done very well maintaining your flowerbeds. Yes, honey time does fly. When I retired it even grew wings to fly faster. LOL. Blessings to you and yours for a fun filled holiday. Be safe. xoxo, Susie

  2. Your garden is lovely and time flies entirely too fast. I saw an Instagram picture today that said summer should get a ticket for going too fast.

  3. So lovely! I have some foxglove too, but they are definitely over with. Mine never come back, even though I believe they are supposed to reseed. I still remember looking forward to Spring as if it was only last week, so July? I can't even. I keep trying to slow down the days, so far I have not been real successful.
