watering the garden

I love to water the flower gardens by hand every morning.  It's my chance to see what's blooming, what has begun to fade and what's waiting in the wings.

Each time I think the garden is at its most beautiful, I notice something else beginning to bloom. The spring annuals are still putting on a show...sweet johnnie jump ups, snapdragons and blue lobelia have yet to succumb to summers heat.

The columbine and penstemon have just started to come into bloom.   While the first showing of foxgloves have started to wane.

This spotted calla lilly returns for me each year.  It still amazes me that it will completely disappear through winter and as soon the spring sun warms the soil these beautiful leaves begin to reach for the sky.

The roses are blooming but won't peak until June...take a break through the heat of August and then put on another show in September and October.

I moved a couple into new spots in the garden and I am hoping they are happy and will blossom in their new homes.

This pretty ground cover is a hardy geranium.  I planted several different varieties and can count on their delicate blooms through the heat of the summer.

I am behind in my mulching and seed scattering this year.  I usually put out zinnia, cosmos, larkspur and love in mist seeds for cutting but haven't even readied their bed yet.  I have no plans this weekend so I am hoping to get an early morning start and play a little catch up out there.

I look forward to seeing what's blooming your garden today.  Thanks for stopping by mine.

xo, Patty

I'm joining Tracie's cottage garden party over at Fishtail Cottage.

  1. Your gardens are beautiful. You have done a marvelous job of it! I love that you have so much blooming. It is too early here for things to be blooming...other than tulips and daffodils and now lilacs. It is fun to see how far ahead of us you are with all your beautiful roses and all. xo Diana

You are a little further forward with your flowers than we are. the weather here has been pretty appaling recently with very high winds, heavy showers and mainly cold! we are not really able to put tender plants out! Still I really enjoy seeing yours. Joan

  13. Good Morning...
    Loved seeing your gorgeous gardens.

I'm a tad bit green with envy... I wish we had your USDA zone, and I wish we didn't have a million deer.

We are going to try to get a few veggies in this weekend.

The rule of thumb around these parts, is to not plant until after Mother's Day.

Have a good one....and thanks for sharing!

  18. Oh my, I have missed several posts. Your garden is beautiful. I like to hand water too. Try to get out early every morning to water and deadhead. My twelve yr. old granddaughter did a great job while I gone, but I like to fine tune a little. Can't wait to see your Red Flyer planted. I have to replant mine. My petunias got aphids and the snails snacked on them.
